OrthoRide™ Barrel Racer Saddle Pad
Barrel Racing Saddle Pad with Poron XRD® Shock Inserts
The OrthoRide™ Barrel Racer is a Western saddle pad built specifically for barrel saddles. It uses the same orthopedic construction as the original OrthoRide correction pad — Poron XRD® shock inserts, gap-filling memory foam and an orthopedic felt bottom — sized and shaped to suit the shorter skirt of a barrel saddle.
Its job in a run is stability: keeping the saddle level and settled through hard turns so your horse can commit to the pattern instead of bracing against a saddle that shifts.
Why barrel racers found this pad before we built it
The original OrthoRide was never designed for barrel racing. Barrel racers found it on their own — the Poron XRD® shims at the front of the pad were stabilizing their saddles through turns and holding them level. Before long they were one of the largest groups buying it.
The Barrel Racer is our response: the same proven design, resized and reshaped for barrel saddles rather than adapted from a general-purpose pad.
How it works
Three materials do three different jobs:
- Poron XRD® inserts sit beneath the saddle-bar contact area and absorb shock and impact. The same material is used in professional athletic padding.
- Memory foam fills small gaps where the saddle doesn't precisely match the shape of your horse's back, so contact stays even rather than concentrated.
- Orthopedic-grade felt lines the full bottom for cushioning and to wick sweat away from the back.
A wither relief insert takes pressure off the point where the weight of saddle and rider concentrates at the saddle bars — the area where poor fit shows up as white hairs, which is permanent trauma to the hair follicle.
Best suited for
- Barrel horses that lose rhythm or brace through turns
- Saddles that slip or shift during fast direction changes
- Horses with high or narrow withers
- Saddles that sit slightly too wide or tilt forward
- Riders who want shoulder protection without adding bulk
Colors
Available with four wear-leather finishes:
- Natural
- Turquoise Bloom
- Desert Rose
- High Sierra
Honest fit guidance
A correction pad can fill moderate gaps, absorb shock and improve how pressure is spread — but it cannot make a badly shaped saddle tree fit your horse. If a saddle is already too narrow, adding padding increases pressure rather than relieving it.
If your horse shows pain on palpation, persistent dry spots in the sweat pattern, white hairs at the withers, or resistance to being saddled, have the saddle fit assessed by a qualified saddle fitter before continuing to ride in it.
